All of them

This child right here:

she just told me that she doesn’t get embarrassed ever.

She also said that her middle name is Jean because she has all the genes.

Alright then.

Today

My work has lost its mind and so this week I work 1 day shift and 2 night shifts.  I am a zombie walking.  Avery is doing homework and yelling random facts about house cats and the control of invasive species.  He is specifically upset about a group of islands off the coast of Australia where rabbit populations, cat population and a virus have wreaked havoc on a fragile ecosystem.  The more people try to fix what they broke, the more messed up it gets.  Its both tragic.... and well frankly dumb.

Olivia has built a nest on the couch with blankets, pillows and her coveted phone which she has been restricted from all week.  I won’t hear from her until I go to work.

Kayla is doing the dishes and very interested in the topic of invasive species and the destruction of habitat.

Ava is hiding in her room on her phone and pretending she doesn’t find Ruby interesting.

Ruby is wandering between me and Ava discussing five nights at Freddie’s and whether or not she can create a stress ball from an old glove she has been carrying around for a week and some flour.  I do not think this is a good idea.

The chameleons still hate me and I have three chihuahuas on my lap.  The pug is not currently coughing but has alarming emissions from the other end.  Still I am sad that I need to go shower and get dressed for work.  It is nicer to be home on a rainy day.

Oregon

Every year we take a trip back to the Oregon coast.  I can't live without making this trip at least once since the last time we moved from our coastal home.  I dream of being back every day, the ocean feels like home to me and I truly felt like I belonged there.  Most of the early years when the children were babies we got a hotel for the stay (usually 3-5 days) and it was the most expensive trip of the year.  The last 4 years of trips our family has gotten camping down to a science and we have stayed at a beautiful place called Beverly Beach.  Ideally we rent yurts but when those are unavailable we all fit nicely in our 8 person tent.  It is never warm on the Oregon coast, even in the dead of summer but with six people, our tent is always comfortable.

This year we played on the beach as always, went crabbing and had a huge seafood boil at the campsite with two great friends.  We also made fish magnets and went to some of the programs put on by the campsite.  We even went whale watching hosted in Depot Bay with our camp hosts.

We visited Hatfield Marine Research center, and Rouge brewery.  We even got to see our friend Herman the Sturgeon on our way home.   This year’s trip was also a commemoration of our wedding in June.  We decided that our honeymoon wasn’t really so fun without kids, dogs and friends and I don’t regret a second of it.

Halloween is for reptiles too

This year after trick or treat day was over we dropped off our pumpkins with the reptile rescue. There were already quite a few there. Happy Halloween tortoises and iguanas 🦎 🎃

Halloween with teenagers

This is probably the last year of trick or treating for at least two of the girls.  Olive and Kayla went with their cousin Sawyer.  Kayla was the plague doctor for the third year in a row.  She so loves that mask.  Olivia was Cosima from Orphan Black.  This meant she just got to dress funky and adorable.  I am pretty sure Sawyer was dressed as teenage angst.  Bryce was a slice of pizza for the third year in a row as well, he and Kayla have more in common than they would care to admit.  Ben was a skeleton and actually wore his mask the whole time.  Avery and I were the couple from a stupid horror movie I love and Rachel was a unicorn.  It was fun, although short lived because it happened to be a Tuesday night.  Soon, I will be staying home and handing out candy, but every year, I am thankful to have one more year of trick or treat and costumes.
